- Questions DescriptionThe Department of General Services is
seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II for the Facility Maintenance
Division. The Maintenance Mechanic II will install, maintain,
repair, or replace various interior/exterior building components,
assist with carpentry projects, and oversee contractors work as
needed.Essential FunctionsEssential functions include, but are not
limited to:
- Installs or replaces various interior flooring including carpet
squares, VCT (vinyl composite tiles), sheet vinyl, and ceramic
tile.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, or replaces various interior
suspended ceiling systems and acoustic panel ceiling tiles.
- Installs, maintains, inspects, repairs, or replaces various
exterior building components including, but not limited to, siding,
decks, handrails, balusters, entrance ramps, and steps.
- Repairs or replaces concrete sidewalk sections, steps, curbs,
and slabs by constructing form, mixing/pouring concrete, and
finishing.
- Inspects, maintains, repairs, or assists with construction of
beach accessways, beach lifeguard stands, picnic shelters, benches,
bleachers, gazebos, boat/kayak ramps, and finger piers.
- Repairs small potholes or cracks in parking lots.
- Assists with roof inspections and maintenance.
- Maintains, repairs, replaces, or assists with construction of
framed/masonry walls, foundations, and windows/trim.
- Provides support for special events by maintaining,
transporting to site, and setting up bleachers, temporary fencing,
and barricades. Removes and returns to storage location after
events.
- Repairs, installs, or removes modular furniture system
components, file cabinets, partitions, and other office case goods
and appointments. Moves from building to building.
- Obtains estimates for materials and/or services and submits for
purchase order by following procurement procedure.
- Uses work order management application (Facility Dude) to
update assigned work orders with notes, labor hours, and materials
used.
- Schedules, coordinates, and oversees work while serving as
liaison between division managers and contractors.
- Operates tractor and front-end loader.Education/ExperienceWork
requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational and
technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of
high school or equivalency.Required:
- Two years' experience as maintenance mechanic.Preferred:
- Two years of experience installing commercial flooring carpet
squares and VCT (vinyl composite tile).Additional Information &

- Valid Driver's License required. A DMV transcript dated within
30 days be required if selected for hire.
- This position is designated as Essential and may be required to
report to work during City closures due to inclement weather and
other emergencies.Work Location: Facility Maintenance, 2840 Dana
St, Norfolk, VA 23509Work Schedule:
- Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week
- Occasional overtime
- Rotation as needed.Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for
a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for new hires. The signing bonus
will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60
days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary
period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active
employee in good standing.
- Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive
paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan,
basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and
dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability,
optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and
dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit
union and employer provided parking.
- Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the
same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement,
life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending
upon funding and authorization.
- Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only
eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in
credit union.
- Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a
position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will
be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward
your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with
Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to
contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement
benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage
employees toward continued self-development and education.
