Overview

Virginia Oncology Associates, the largest group of medical professionals in Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina devoted exclusively to cancer care and blood disorders, has an exciting opportunity for an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for our office(s) located in Norfok.

Responsibilities

  • Primary full-time coverage of the acute urgent care clinic in addition to the Brock infusion center including evaluation and management of a broad variety of Hematology/Oncology focused urgent issues which may include but are not limited to:
  • Neutropenic fever -Fatigue/Weakness
  • Dizziness/Lightheadedness -Cancer related pain
  • GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea constipation) -UTI symptoms
  • Suspected DVT -Electrolyte abnormalities
  • Dehydration -Anemia/thrombocytopenia
  • Stomatitis/Mucositis/Esophagitis -SOB/Cough
  • Mild/Moderate headache -Infection with stable vital signs
  • Odynophagia/Dysphagia -Rash
  • Endocrinopathies/Immune related adverse effects
  • Provide direct urgent care support to hematology/oncology patients in an outpatient setting
  • Perform an appropriate focused or expanded history and examination for acute, complex, and chronically ill patients
  • Initiate patient work-up in coordination with the patient's primary oncologist to include evaluation, diagnostic testing, ordering and implementation of care
  • Provide oncology-based care in a collaborative practice focusing on urgent or acute issues relating to disease or treatment
  • Coordinate ED transfers for hospital admission as indicated
  • Communicate changes in the patient's status to the primary attending and team in a timely manner
  • Collaborates and consults with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective and timely treatment as well as continuity of patient care
  • Rapid Response Team Leader during established clinical work hours
  • Brock infusion room duties include: management of treatment reactions, lab review, available for nurse consult, incident to duties, assess patients chair side, refills, regimen entry/edit, order entry, provide chair side education and consent etc.
  • Prescribe various drug therapies
  • Assess patient and family needs; provide appropriate education
  • Promote staff education
  • Incorporates evidence-based research into clinical practice
  • Documentation of interventions

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years ARNP or PA-C experience in Medical Oncology.
  • Previous Urgent Care or Emergency Department experience a plus
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective communication skills are critical to success in this role
  • Efficient, accurate and timely documentation is expected
  • Strong team player with a can-do attitude is a must!
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team is essential
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program required
  • Virginia state and DEA licensure required
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Current BLS certification
  • No office travel required
