Job Description:

Moffatt & Nichol's Norfolk, VA office is seeking a Bridge Structural Engineer with 6 to 10 years of experience with transportation structure projects. Moffatt & Nichol provides a wide variety of structural transportation services to Federal (DoD), State (VDOT), municipal and private clients. We are looking for an individual with strong design skills and a NBIS Team Leader.

Duties and responsibilities:

* Provide experience in project planning including general oversight, design, implementation, and ensure quality of work products * Maintain knowledge of state DOT and local agency design standards and criteria, practices, and policies * Responsible for writing and coordinating structural technical reports, cost estimates, marketing and fee proposals * Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection group and all company disciplines * Conducts bridge inspections and assists in supervision of site investigations as needed * Analyzes deteriorated components, assess remaining capacities * Strong management skills including personnel and project management * Perform QC/QA review of documents prepared by others * Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Master's degree in Structural preferred * Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia or eligible to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months * 6 to 10 years of experience in bridge analysis, load ratings, design, and contract documentation * 4+ years of experience as a NBIS Team Leader with inspection experience with NHI Certification (NHI-130055) and Refresher (NHI-130053), if applicable * Experience that includes planning, inspection, design (new and rehabilitative), preparation of construction documents and construction support services for bridge projects * Proven ability to deliver a quality product in a timely manner * Inspection experience with special equipment such as snoopers / bucket truck, boats, scaffolding. SPRAT certification desired * Must have knowledge of state DOT (VDOT preferred), local municipal, and county design standards and criteria, practices, and policies * Proficiency in AASHTOWare Bridge Rating (BrR), LARSA 4D, SAP, CSI Bridge, VBridge, VBent computer, Leap Concrete, FB-Multipier software or the ability to direct others in the use of this software is desired. * Additional design experience with other states is desirable * Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with strong attention to detail, and ability to progress to team leadership * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Ability and willingness to travel as required. Travel is primarily local and typically does not require an overnight stay. Some weekly travel may be required on occasion * Selected candidate must consent to and a pass a post-off/pre-employment drug screening * All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working conditions:

The work takes place in both the office and the field which may require occasional extended hours or weekends to meet deadlines. In-climate weather may occur.

Physical requirements:

Must be able to navigate field and climb as required to inspect bridges and other structures. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Office work may require sitting for long periods of time, interacting with clients, and traveling as necessary.

The work for this position is generally not physically demanding. Most work will be in the office with travel and field investigations, as required.
