Terms and Conditions apply. The practice of nuclear medicine is
performed by a nuclear medicine technologist responsible for the
administration of radioactive materials to humans of all ages
(newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research
purposes. A nuclear medicine technologist performs nuclear medicine
exams or treatments at the request of and for interpretation by a
licensed independent practitioner. Core Competencies Perform all
the duties of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist I. Capable of safely
administering radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications
including the identification of incompatibilities and/or
interactions. Expected to assess a patient risk for allergic
reaction prior to administration of radiopharmaceuticals and
adjunctive medications and following appropriate protocols for
escalation of concerns. Expected to evaluate pertinent lab values
prior to administering radiopharmaceuticals or other related
medications and beginning the ordered examination. Capable of
providing accurate explanations and instructions to the patient and
family using age-appropriate language and verifies that the patient
understands and agrees to the completion of the ordered exam.
Capable of performing ordered exam or therapy in accordance with
established imaging protocols while respecting the patient’s
ability and comfort. Capable of adhering to policies and utilizing
protocols to determine that expected outcomes have been met.
Capable of documenting deviations from protocol and/or patient
specific issues that may impact image quality. Capable of notifying
the appropriate health care provider when immediate clinical
response is necessary based on procedural findings, patient
condition or other relevant concerns that may impact patient safety
or care. Expected to timely complete all required post processing,
image display and transfer for physician review. Expected timely
order closure, charge entry and PACS QA completion. Expected to
routinely cover open shifts as appropriate based on your level of
competency. Advanced Competencies N/A Knowledge and Competency
Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies. Complete
understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department
and health system policies, and safety and service standards.
Complete understanding of imaging equipment, image processing
software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
Education, Certification & Experience Certification by the Nuclear
Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) or Registry by
the American Registry of Radiology Technologist -Nuclear Medicine
(ARRT-N) and have successfully completed their 6-month orientation.
