We provide quality care to children and adolescents in need using quality evidence based practice treatments. Founded in 1986, Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health in an 82-bed hospital facility accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).POSITION SUMMARY:Reporting to the Director of Education, the Recreational Therapist will use recreational therapy as a tool for assisting children and adolescents with a range of psychiatric conditions. Working in a therapeutic environment, the recreational therapist will plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs. The recreational therapist will assess patient needs and develop treatment plans that help patients learn social skills, teach patients how to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.POSITION DUTIES/SCOPE OF WORK:Plan goal oriented therapeutic recreation activities to include community engagement, therapeutic groups, and the ability to associate group sessions to current treatment goalsProvide a lead role with hands-on facilitation for groups and documentationAssess motor skills, cognition, and social functioning of patients and communicate findings to therapeutic treatment Prioritize and demonstrate effective time management, have problem-solving abilities, appropriate social skills, including role modeling and respect for staff and childrenDemonstrate communication skills for limit-setting and boundaries for patients and staff is necessaryDemonstrate physical endurance and staminaPractice of therapeutic/professional boundaries; Have a willingness to seek/accept supervision when neededProvide direction, guidance, and supervision to Recreational Therapy staff in the absence of the direct supervisorEnsure consistent service delivery by treating patients/residents, families, and co-workers with respect, appropriately communicating and responding, and demonstrating appropriate boundaries QualificationsREQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:Bachelor's Degree in Recreational TherapyREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to de-escalate situations with patientsStrong written and verbal skills Ability to maintain strong interpersonal relationshipsAbility to maintain confidentialityWorking knowledge of behavior managementBroad knowledge and understanding of common mental health diagnoses (e.g., Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis, ADHD, Bipolar, Suicide, and others)PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:1+ years of prior leadership experience in a youth settingLICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification from a recognized certification agencyEXPOSURE CATEGORIES:Blood borne disease exposure category: Category I PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The physical requirements for this position include being able to stand, squat, kneel, sit, and lie on the floor for long periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 lbs of weight. Must be able to read, write clearly, talk, and listen.
