Job Description:
Virginia Zoo Education Specialist The Virginia Zoo seeks one (1)
full-time Education Specialist. The Education Specialist works
within the Education Deaprtment to maximize the effectiveness of
the Virginia Zoo's education programs, including, but not limited
to on and off-site school programs, on-site group/scout programs,
and on-site camp programs. The Education Specialist reports to the
Education Programs Manager and will: Contribute to the scheduling,
training, and evaluation of education programs, including but not
limited to on- and off-site school programs, camp programs, and
scout/group programs. Assist the Education Management Team with
providing supervision and evaluation of staff and volunteers'
execution of education programs. Contribute to the preparation,
setup, execution, and evaluation of education program. Conduct
informal programming and guest experiences through various
interpretations programs, as assigned. Contribute to developing and
revising program lesson plans, learning resources, and program
offerings. Contribute to the preparation, setup, and execution of
education programs. Handle Animal Ambassador Collection animals
utilized in educational programs. Assist Animal Ambassador
department with tasks associated with education programs, including
but not limited to the training of educators, training of animals,
and occasional care and husbandry of the animal ambassador
collection. Assist other Zoo departments by researching content,
writing articles, and producing promotional and support materials,
as assigned. Remain up to date on latest trends and research to
promote effective educational programs. Attend to other duties as
assigned. Experience Required Education and Experience: High school
diploma or equivalent; some college preferred. At least two years
related experience required. Experience writing lesson
plans/curriculum for school programs, preferred Required
Skills/Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication
skills. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent
time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful
environment. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related
software. Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting at a
desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15
pounds at times. Must be able to work outside year-round in varying
weather conditions Must be able to work some nights and weekends,
as assigned Must be able to produce a negative TB test within 30
days of hire and be up to date on relevant vaccines, including Tdap
